When it comes to Mother’s Day gifts, my mom is big on the classic, non-material requests she likes to call “the gift of time” (ie. helping her pick weeds in the garden, or organizing her storage room together while listening to CBC radio programming). I’ll have you know that I do intend to give “the gift of time” this year, but there’s nothing like a sweet treat and a few unexpected material goodies to spoil my mom on Mother’s Day. My classic sugar cookies are famous in my family and it’s been a while since I’ve whipped some up. This time, I personalized them with variations of my mom’s initial so she knows they were made especially for her…and it’s her day, so she doesn’t even have to share.

I used my family sugar cookie recipe, similar to this one, and created royal icing in my mom’s favourite colour, bright blue!
